Eulogy on Katyani

O Goddess Katyayani, the one Whose lotus feets are reverred by the thirty-three demi-gods¹, Who is the primary cause of the creation, maintenance and destruction of the world, Who is the fierce destroyer, Who is the consort of Tripurari or Shiv, Who is known as Durga, Who is the destroyer of sorrows of the world! Be happy with me.||1||

You always destroy the cunning demons, You entice the cunnings (using Maya), and You are indeed the absolver of grief. O the one Who is the abode of the universe and Whose forms are beyond the scope of thoughts! Those who indulge in Your devotion, never face difficulties and hurdles.||2||

Having risen from You, Brahma creates the universe, Vishnu maintains it, and Shambhu destroys it (in other words, You create them for various reasons). O Mother! You create, maintain, and destroy them along with Kaal. This is just Your sportive play and You never get destroyed.||3||

O the one Who absolves the pain and Who is the best among warriors! Those, by whom You are remembered, never get pervaded by the arrows of enemies. And their arrows, which sink in the limbs of the enemy, suck away the life away from the body, O the destroyer of the king of demons!||4||

O Beautiful Durga! That who chants Your name in the battle is seens as the all-destroying Kaal by his enemies. And indeed You decide that person as the victorious, who is chanting Your Omkar-form name continuously².||5|| Read More…

Navadurga – The Nine Forms of Goddess Durga – KATYANI

The sixth form of mother Durga is known as Katyayani. The legend about her name runs as follows-

There was a great sage named Kata. His son was Katya. In his lineage Katyayana became a sage of worldwide repute. He practiced austere penance for several years in order to get the mother goddess propitiated. He cherished a keen desire in his heart to have the goddess in the form of his daughter. The mother was pleased to accede to his request.

After sometime when high-handedness of Mahisasura, the demon, crossed every limit, the trinity of gods-Brahma, Visnu and Siva, got infuriated and they created a goddess by apportioning some part of their splendour, in order to destroy the demon. The sage Katyayana had the first privilege to worship her, so she was called Katyayani.

Another story tells that she did take birth as his daughter. She was born on the 14th dark of the month Asvina. Accepted the worship of Katyayana for three days- e.g., on 7th 8th and 9th of the bright fortnight in the same month and killed the demon on Vijayadasami.

She is ever-unfailing in granting the wishes of the devotees. The Braja damsels worshipped this very goddess with a desire to have Sri Krsna as their husband. She is an established presiding deity of Braja area. Her form is extremely divine and radiant. Her complexion is golden bright and radiant. She has to use arms. Her right upper hand is in a pose of allaying all fears and the lower one is in a pose of granting boon. In her left upper hand she holds a sword and a lotus flower adorns her lower left hand. Her vehicle is lion.

On sixth day of Navaratra it is her Katyayani form that is worshipped. That day the mid of the striver stays in Ajna Cakra. In the Yogic discipline Ajna Cakra is of greatest importance. His mind staying in Ajna Cakra the striver makes a complete surrender and offers himself to the goddess and then such a devotee very easily gets the direct vision of the mother Katyayani. All the four objects-Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksa are in easy reach of a Sadhaka who worships mother Katyayani with devotion and faith. Even though living on a mundane plane the devotee is equipped with an unearthly splendour and influence. He becomes immune from all diseases, sorrows and fears etc. there is no better and easier way than the worship of mother Katyayani for the destruction of sins accumulated in the previous lives. Her worshipper always remains in her close company and becomes fit for the supreme abode.

Devi Katyani

In India, Katyani (also known as Katyayani) means dressed in red. In India, the colour red is related to marriage, and most of the women get married in red saris, gopi dresses, punjabis, etc.

Katyani is a demonstration or aparition of the Demigod Durga, also known as Parvati, Shiva’s wife. She is worshiped as the Demigod who if you make vow of fasting, would give you the husband you have wished and prayed for. The fasting, called Kätyäyané-vrata is made for a whole month, offering such things as sandal, flowers, incense, etc.

“During the month of Märgaçérña, every day early in the morning the young daughters of the cowherds (gopis) would take one another’s hands and, singing of Krishna’s transcendental qualities, go to the Yamunä (Jamuna) to bathe. Desiring to obtain Krishna as their husband, they would then worship the goddess Kätyäyané with incense, flowers and other items”.

Each day they rose at dawn. Calling out to one another by name, they all held hands and loudly sang the glories of krishna while going to the Kälindé (Kalindi–personified Jamuna) to take their bath.

History of Katyani Puja

According to the Hindu Shastra (Scripture), during the ‘Dapor-Era’ before appearing on Earth, Sree Krishna sent his parents and other family members to the world of the mortals. Inhabitants of Vraja nourished voluntary religious observance to get sree krishna along with his father Bashudev and mother Debokee as the son, friend, husband and god. During the ‘Dapor-Era’ milk maids(Gopbalas) of Brindaban, first started observing the month-long Katyani Puja at the beginning of Deway sea-son (Kartik and Agrahayan months of the Bangla year) on the river bank of Jamuna making idosimilar to the ‘Devi Durga’.

Katyani Puja in Magura ends

The five-day Katyani Puja of the Hindu community ended Friday night in Magura. It was observed with great religious fervour and festivities.

Although Durga Puja is the greatest religious festival of Bangla-speaking Hindus, Katyani Puja is their main festival in Magura district for long.

As in previous years, the Puja drew thousands of Hindu devotees from different parts of Magura, its adjoining districts and even from India. In the sub-continent, the Puja is observed only in Magura for the last 53 years, it is only during the last 18 years that it has become a festival celebrated with such religious fervour in only Magura in this sub-continent.

Satish Chandra, rich man in Parnanduali village in Magura Sadar upazila first introduced the Katyani Puja.

Idols of Katyani Puja are similar to those of Durga Puja.

Katyani Puja main religious festival of Hindus

The Katyani Puja has over time become the main religious festival of Hundus of the Magura district, where it is celebrated with more enthusiasm than anywhere else on the subcontinent. And it even draws thousands of devotees every year from as far away as India. According to the Hindu shastra (scripture), during the ‘Dapor Era’ Sree Krishna sent his parents and other family members to the world of mortals before appearing on Earth. During the ‘Dapor Era,’ milk maids (Gopbalas) of Brindaban first started observing the monthlong Katyani Puja at the beginning of the Deway season (the Kartik and Agrahayan months of the Bangla year) on the banks of the river Jamuna, where they made idols similar to the ‘Devi Durga’.

It was Satish Chandra, a wealthy man from the Parnandualy village in Magura sadar upazila, who first observed Katyani Puja approximately 52 years ago. Since then, and especially in the last 17 years, Katyani Puja has become increasingly popular among the Hindus here. Kazal Bhaduri, a resident of Kolkata who came to Magura to celebrate the ‘Katyani festival’, says, “Every year I wait for this festival.” “This festival is a pride and tradition of the people of Magura regardless of their religion,” Advocate Pradyut Kumar Singh says.
A common attraction of the festival is the tastefully decorated gates and arches erected at different mandaps and important points of the town. A fair is also arranged every year on the occasion and runs for approximately one month. “We are proud and satisfied as the Muslims here sincerely cooperate with us to arrange and observe the occasion peacefully,” Chittaranjan Shikder, one of the organisers of the festival, says (H. Seraj, November 29, 2004).
